Sam

Off-key but enthusiastic, Sam hummed every time he was in the back of the house at the diner that day—which, luckily for Gracie, wasn’t often.

It was busy at the diner that day, so Christina hadn’t had a chance to question him as much as he knew she wanted to. He’d just told her the date went well, they kissed, and they were definitely seeing each other again. She’d looked thrilled for him.

Sam hummed again while he waited for Gracie to finish two orders of fries.

“Lord have mercy, I’d thaw the potatoes with my own hands if it meant less time listening to that—whatever you’re trying to hum.” But Gracie was laughing as she pulled the fries from the hot oil.

“You wound me.” Sam pressed his hand over his heart playfully.

He was daydreaming, too—about when he’d see Denver again, and what they might do, and when he’d get the chance to kiss him again.

And hopefully a lot more.

God, it had been a long time since he’d actually wanted someone, felt turned on by their very presence or the way their eyes swept over his body. He’d forgotten it was even possible. Had it happened before?

He paused to seriously think about it. Once with a high school boyfriend, but those were fleeting affairs at the best of times. Otherwise, he hadn’t been displeased by anyone, but he’d never been particularly attracted to them, either.

But the way Denver had pulled him close and cradled him, taken over the kiss… he hadn’t let himself be dreamy, or even a little less than strong and unyielding, with anyone in so long.

“If you let that table’s orders die, we’ll go into the weeds.”

“Shit.” Sam snapped out of it and grabbed the plates on instinct more than seeing them, balancing them on his tray. “Thanks.”

“Uh huh. Will it be a crepe or a waffle for loverboy today?”

“I don’t think he’s in this morning. Maybe for supper.”

Gracie winked. “Late night?”

Sam blushed so hard he barely remembered how to hipcheck the kitchen door open. He heard Gracie’s laughter echo after him but ignored it.

There were two new customers waiting. After he dropped off the food, he led them to a table for two.

No question they were gay, though they didn’t look like a couple. One had bright green hair, a bit spiky and tousled, while the other had long, blond hair that curled perfectly around his shoulders in feminine ringlets. Both wore lipgloss, or lipstick, or something.

“Welcome to the diner. Have you been here before?”

“No. We’re here on Denver’s recommendation.”

Hearing his name from the green-haired guy’s lips was a weird moment. Sam jolted with surprise. “Oh! Right. Okay. Cool.”

“Had to come meet you. We’ve heard a lot,” the other… guy? Girl?… added, winking at him.

Green-haired guy spoke up again. “He’s River. I’m Kyle. Sam, right?”

“H-Hi. Yeah.” Sam dropped menus in front of both of them, well aware that he had a table waiting on their final bill and another that needed water. “I’ll be back in a minute to take your drink orders.
